Do I Need Motorcycle Insurance In Florida?

Motorcycle by the WaterYou are ready to get out onto the open road with your new motorcycle. Before you do, take a closer look at Florida's requirements for motorcycle insurance. Florida motorcycle insurance is different than it is in most other states. It's always important for you to consider the state's laws, but also your own level of risk, before you head out onto the road. What do you need to know about this type of insurance?

Options For Establishing Financial Responsibility

Before you can legally operate a motorcycle in Florida, you must have the ability to prove financial responsibility. That is, you need to prove there is a way that you can pay for any damage you or your bike cause to other people or their property. Florida offers several ways you can do this.
  • Obtain Liability Coverage: This is the most common option. You'll purchase a policy from a licensed carrier in the state.
  • Obtain a Self-Insurance Certificate: The least common option, this certificate is issued by the Bureau of Financial Responsibility only after you've provided evidence of your available funds.
  • Obtain a Financial Responsibility Certificate: This is done through the Bureau of Financial Responsibility after you've made a cash deposit or security deposit with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and posted a surety bond.
In most cases, individuals elect to purchase motorcycle liability insurance. The state's minimum for liability coverage includes:
  • $10,000 for one person in bodily insurance liability
  • $20,000 for two or more people in bodily insurance liability
  • $10,000 per accident in property damage liability
It's also important to note that although Florida is a no-fault state, this does not apply to motorcycle owners. In other words, you need liability insurance. Also important, if you are over the age of 21 and you have at least $10,000 worth of medical insurance coverage, you may not have to wear a helmet while operating your motorcycle.

Keep in mind that this type of motorcycle insurance (liability coverage) only protects other people. It does not provide protection for your bike. You may wish to consider purchasing comprehensive insurance and collision insurance to protect your motorcycle's value.
